My children will learn to play an instrument.
And I will probably choose that musical instrument over sports.
I believe that sports are so important for children.
They teach so many important lessons that I want my children to learn,
so we will do sports with our kids.
But we will put music first.
I was so lucky to be able to be involved in so many things as a kid and teenager.
I played soccer, dance, cheerleading, ran cross-country
(I was TERRIBLE! ha!)
sang in choir and madrigals, played in orchestras and took private lessons,
and did many things with the LDS church as well.
Wow! I sounded busy!
I wouldn't trade any of those experiences for anything.
I learned so much and made some great friends.
But, I don't dance or cheer anymore.
I don't really run or play soccer anymore.
But I still play my violin, almost every day.
I don't believe that everyone has a musical gift, but learning music is
something a person will carry with them their entire lives.
Because of all those hours of practicing and all the money (thanks mom and dad!)
I have a priceless talent that I am able to share with others.
It took so much work and time and, I will admit,
many times I wanted to quit and give up.
But I am so glad I didn't.
Music is one of the most important parts of my life.
I will always encourage my family to pursue music.
I think it is one of the most important skills a person can have.
A music student learns self-discipline, how to practice, how to stay committed
and how to follow through.
I learned valuable skills through all my years playing violin
that I don't think I could've otherwise.
Of course, we want to supply our children with as many opportunities as possible,
but we have decided to make music a priority.
